Alopecia Areata affects nearly 7 million people in the United States, or around 2% of the US population. Here’s what you should know about this type of increasingly common hair loss:
Alopecia areata is a recurrent disease, which can cause hair loss in any hair-bearing area such as the scalp, eyebrows, beard and more. The most common type of alopecia areata presents as round or oval patches of hair loss most noticeably on the scalp or in the eyebrows. The hair usually grows back within 6 months to one year. Most patients will suffer episodes of hair loss in the same area in the future.
What causes Alopecia Areata?
By definition, an autoimmune condition develops when the immune system mistakes healthy cells for foreign substances. Normally, the immune system defends your body against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria.
As an autoimmune condition, if you have alopecia areata, your immune system mistakenly attacks your hair follicles, the structures from which hairs grow. When the follicles become smaller and stop producing hair, it leads to hair loss.
Treatment Options
Treatments may address any underlying conditions in conjunction with topical scalp medications. Because each individual may have differing causes and triggers for flare ups, protocol for treatment should include both customized treatments and a means of tracking to adjust as needed.
While there’s no known cure for alopecia areata, there are treatments available to both slow down future hair loss and help hair grow back more quickly.
